Seven

A s Cade strode down the hall to the dining room of his mansion, he slowed and walked more quietly. It was Thursday and over a week ago on Tuesday, Katherine had moved into his Houston home. Last Thursday morning he’d had to fly to California. It had been one week that seemed as if he had been away from her for a month. His eagerness to see her increased with every step he took.

Pausing in the open doorway, he looked inside. Scaffolding was along one wall. The furniture had been moved to one end of the room and draped with cloths as an extra precaution to keep paint off. Drop cloths were spread on the floor beneath the scaffolding and ladders. Katherine stood on a platform as she drew on the wall.

When his gaze flicked over her, his pulse jumped. She was in a T-shirt and cutoffs and had one thick braid that hung down her back. Taking his time, he looked down her long, shapely legs, and then up over her round bottom, mentally peeling away her cutoffs.

With his pulse racing, he leaned one shoulder against the doorjamb and continued to look at her. She had always set him on fire and she could now more than ever. She was more beautiful than she had been when she was twenty. He thought about her kisses when they had been in her office. Just memories aroused him.

He liked watching her work. It fascinated him how swiftly she drew and her certainty in what she was doing. He had come back to Texas with an opposing mix of emotions, wanting to see her, hoping to hire her, but still steaming over her refusal to answer his calls and letters. And then when he saw her at the auction, she had taken his breath away with her beauty and he wanted her more than he ever had. He’d had no intention of getting involved emotionally with her again because of their stormy history, but now that was fading and accusations were in the open and reasons clarified.

Cade watched her draw. With the past put behind them, the big barrier of her damnable drive and ambition and craving for success remained. He didn’t want to fall in love with a woman who was bound heart and soul to her career. He didn’t want that in his life. But he wanted Katherine in his bed. She made his blood boil, and he wasn’t sleeping nights because of thinking about her and wanting her. Never had he known a woman he desired the way he did her. And he hadn’t met any who could kiss or make love like Katie. She was beautiful, sexy and off-limits.

He remembered their kisses in her office and knew she wasn’t totally off-limits. She couldn’t resist passion, either. His gaze roamed over her with speculation. He wanted her in his bed. And soon.

Trying to get his mind back to other things and cool down, he thought about the evening. He had something to tell her and he debated whether he should or keep everything to himself.
